“When your ancestors want you to find them, you will!”
Virtual Voyaging by Rex Toomey [Completed 28th June 2025]
A call went out for volunteers to spend an hour or two,
And join with local students, an adventure to pursue,
With age defining every move and joy within each heart,
The seniors ventured forth as one to play their special part.
The virtual voyage now undertook for travellers so bold,
Was not deterred by mysteries, or youth, or being old,
It was a chance for all to learn and have much special fun,
The memories of those involved would never be undone.
So, every time they gathered, a new portal to explore,
With headsets as the key to open every virtual door,
Transported to all different lands across this whole wide world,
These voyagers were so amazed by images now unfurled.
It started with Olympic Games, a special treat for all,
Like badminton balloons where every contest was a ball,
The cherished moments, shared around, were filled with fun and joy,
The generations had no gap, for every girl and boy.
And then there was a challenge, build a boat to win a race,
From scraps of cardboard, plastic too, and bits from anyplace,
Survive the Cascades rapids, was the mission in the end,
With everyone a winner, having fun with their new friend.
Another time the seniors took a bus ride to the school,
And with the students there they learnt about the golden rule,
Construction of a paper plane, exciting and much fun,
Though flying them is harder when they crash and are undone.
Now when it came to toe the line and stand against their ages,
The words they said enlightened all, from out of their life’s pages,
From seniors of their stories filled with joy and happiness,
To student’s hopes and dreams left all inspired, nonetheless.
But finally, the voyage was done, no further need to roam,
The students back to school again, the seniors back to home,
And what a joy the journey was, with friendships made to last,
When asked if they enjoyed the trip, replied “It was a blast!”
