Residents enjoy armchair travel thanks to virtual reality

Immersive Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality at Garden Village

In September Garden Village welcomed Paula Watson from Mid North Coast Red Cross to visit and introduce residents to the world of virtual reality (VR). Paula offers VR experiences on the Mid North Coast so Garden Village jumped on board.

A number of residents wore the Virtual Reality Headsets and loved the experience. Garden Village plans to add more virtual reality experiences to the aged care calendar or events. Aged Care Residents were taken on a tour of Europe and loved it so much they can’t wait to travel again.

Virtual reality opens up a whole new world of immersive armchair travel. Residents can experience virtual adventures right here in Port Macquarie and they loved this engaging new activity.

“It’s a wonderful program… thanks to Paula and the Red Cross for giving Garden Lodge residents the joy of re-living past adventures and experiencing new virtual ones” said Jo Lindsay  Nurse Unit Manager

The headsets can be used individually or in groups. Virtual reality has a positive impact on the wellbeing of older adults, reducing social isolation and promoting social connectivity. The residents who wear the headsets are immersed in a rich 360-degree, 3D environment. It is great for stimulating memories and improving cognition.

The Garden Village team witnessed the power of virtual reality to transform an individuals day.  The virtual reality experiences also create conversation starters, and help people develop meaningful relationships within ageing communities.

SilVR Adventures is helping to improve the lives of older adults by reducing loneliness, improving their mental health, and promoting socialisation through meaningful virtual reality experiences,” said SilVR Adventures founder Colin Pudsey.

SilVR Adventures is dedicated to building technologies and services that improve the lives and wellbeing of ageing people and their caregivers. ‘Our mission has always been to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation among seniors while driving social engagement,” added Colin.

CEO Craig Wearne said “We hope Garden Village Port Macquarie and our residents can continue the journey into the world of Virtual Reality. We are transforming business operations with new technology over the next 3 years as part of our strategic planning and it’s fantastic we can also bring experiences with technology to residents with dementia. The world of smart tech is exciting and we look forward to embracing innovative tech to best support resident engagement, health and wellbeing.”

We would love to grow this program for all residents and clients of Garden Village. If you would like to support a project to bring Virtual Reality to Garden Village every day of the year email marketing@gardenvillage.com.au
