The Garden Village Home Care Team grows to support the community
The Garden Village Home Care team travels across the region to bring professional nursing and home care services to people over 65 in their own home. Support Worker Caryll Maker has worked for Garden Village for three years and loves the diversity of the role, working with new clients and being part of a growing team. We chatted with Caryll to find out about a typical day.
Caryll, how do you usually begin your day?
It’s common to start the morning supporting a client with cleaning or personal care. Home Care support also gives me the opportunity to embrace the outdoor Port Macquarie lifestyle. My day often begins with accompanying a client, who is blind, for a lovely walk on the Breakwall where he used to spend a lot of time fishing. He will tell me about all the different ways of catching fish.
How do you establish a trusting environment with your clients?
Creating a comfortable and trusting environment is so important to our team. Our clients are delightful individuals with fascinating life stories which makes finding common ground easy. My South African background often sparks conversations about travel and the world’s incredible wildlife.
Have you made any other special connections with clients?
I support Graeme who has early onset dementia, accompanying him to his favourite places like the ukulele club and lawn bowls, we have a similar sense of humour. Often there are times I take Graeme to bowls and have a delicious lunch at the Wauchope Bowling Green. Supporting clients with community access also provides respite to the people who care for them every day.
What areas do you travel to in the region?
The Home Care team can travel anywhere in the Greater Port Macquarie region. We service Port Macquarie to Lake Cathie, Bonny Hills, Laurieton and now Wauchope. From companionship and domestic assistance through to medication support and personal care – every day offers variety.

I enjoy being part of a great team that is dedicated to making a difference for people who are experiencing loneliness or in need of care and support to enhance their lifestyle and wellbeing.
When do you recommend people access Home Care supports?
We encourage people to seek support early before a health issue happens or someone can suddenly no longer manage on their own. Seeking support early gives you peace of mind and time to get to know the services that suit you most and complement your lifestyle.
