Armchair Travel Takes Off
Eight Ladies from the Village Connections group at the Garden Village retirement living community recently transported to ancient Egypt, all thanks to the magic of virtual reality. The Armchair Travel Experience ignited conversations and connections among residents aged 70 to 90 years transporting them to a world of ancient wonders, pyramids, and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha.
“On 13 August we visited some breathtaking sights in Egypt, and the ancient wonders of The Great Pyramids from the comfort of our chairs,” said Jo McNamara Community Engagement Manager. The Village Connections Group were introduced to Virtual Reality thanks to a community fundraising campaign and grants from The Aged Persons Welfare Foundation and Port Macquarie Hastings Council.
Destinations included:
- Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha
- The resort of Sharm-el-Sheikh and the Red Sea
- Luxor – A City of Ancient Wonders
- Temple of Abu Simbel
- The Valley of the Kings and the temple of Rameses the sixth
- The Great Pyramids of Giza and a camel ride!
Heather, one of our residents, said “I always dreamed of visiting Egypt but never got the chance. This experience made me feel like I’ve finally been there!” Her sentiment was echoed by many. Jeni was captivated by the intricate details, “The mosque and those colors! The handiwork is simply breathtaking.”
Marguerite shared her awe, “It was incredible! I haven’t been to Egypt, but I did travel through the Suez Canal on my way to Australia from Britain. Seeing the country through virtual reality was truly amazing.”
The virtual journey sparked new conversations and curiosity among our residents and showcased how technology can support social interactions and create unforgettable experiences. Who knew that a virtual trip could bring so much joy and connection? Residents enjoyed morning tea and a cuppa, Village Connections meets once a month thanks the Garden Village Auxiliary.
