Garden Village: A Year in Review

As we approach our 45th year caring for the community, 2024 has been a year of significant progress and connections at Garden Village. Through valuable partnerships and forward-thinking initiatives, we’ve delivered meaningful outcomes for residents, the team, and engaged positively with the wider Port Macquarie community.

These efforts highlight our commitment to creating an inclusive community where everyone has access to high-quality support and accommodation tailored to their unique needs. As proud members of Business NSW, we have actively contributed to vital discussions on housing, ageing, health, careers and future employment through local workshops and Business NSW events.

Thanks to everyone we have partnered with and worked alongside this year – let’s take a look at some of the highlights from 2024.

Investing in Future Nurses

To nurture the next generation of healthcare professionals, we collaborated with Charles Sturt University and TAFE NSW to establish nursing scholarships. This investment in education ensures future nurses are supported locally to advance their careers in aged care.  We also attended TAFE and CSU Health Careers Open Days to inspire future nrusing and aged care students.

Digital Transformation

Thanks to our generous donors and supporters for helping to raise vital funds to introduce technology for good in aged care lifestyle activities, including Virtual Reality and SMART Boards. Technology is transforming the way we engage with residents, fostering connection and enriching their lives. Partnerships with SMART Technologies, Colourworks, Lifeloop and SilVR Adventures have supported our digital transformation. Thanks to the Aged Persons Welfare Foundation, Port Macquarie Hastings Council and the business community who have sponsored the program. Additionally, we were pleased to welcome Mid North Coast Community College who generously hosted a series of Free Tech Savvy Seniors Sessions for Garden Village residents.

Recycling for Good

We partnered with Willing & Able Foundation Ltd to support sustainable initiatives that raise vital funds for the GV Auxiliary to improve the lives of aged care residents. The Return and Earn Scheme also creates supported employment opportunities for people living with disabilities. And going green through recycling helps protect the environment for future generations!

Supporting Employee Initiatives

Garden Village stepped up for two significant causes this year:

  • 25 staff joined the Liberty Coastal Walk to raise awareness and funds for domestic and family violence prevention.
  • For the 12th year, we donated to the Starlight Trek to support employee Julie Hawkins fundraising efforts for seriously ill children. Congratulations Julie.

Celebrating Volunteers

We recognised the vital contributions of volunteers with a special celebration event on National Volunteers Day and signed up to the National Volunteer Strategy. Garden Village attended the Volunteer Expo at the Westport Club sharing the benefits of volunteerism with the community. Special thanks to the Garden Village Auxiliary for their continued dedication and commitment to support Garden Village residents with high care needs.

Strengthening Cultural Connections

Garden Village committed to the Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan and engaged Birpai artist Nardja Carter to create a beautiful artwork that connects generations and celebrates local culture. The new contemporary Birpai artwork titled “Mara Murrung yawutungga” was unveiled at an event attended by the local Birpai LALC, Hastings Secondary College, Port Macquarie Hastings Council, Liberty, Garden Village Board Directors, Rotary Club of Port Macquarie and employees. The artwork is proudly displayed in the Garden Village reception area to welcome visitors to the Village.

Community Engagement

Our team actively participated in key local events, including the Parkinson’s Expo, Hastings Homelessness Collective Event, the Retirement Living Expo and the NSW Seniors Festival. These moments brought us closer to our community and highlighted the importance of connection and inclusion. Special thanks to Hello Koalas, the Stroke Foundation, Port Macquarie Seniors Centre, Tender Funerals and local community groups for supporting the Seniors Festival at Garden Village.

Looking Ahead

In 2025, we’re excited to expand our much-loved Virtual Reality Program, bringing the wonders of armchair travel to even more residents. This program has enriched lives by providing joyful experiences, particularly for those unable to travel or connect socially.  Click here to donate and help us bring more joy to our residents this holiday season.
