Thanks to Graeme Atkins and Susan Murphy who visited Garden Village to share their experiences of dementia. Over twenty employees attended the training sessions.
The in-service training organised by Clinical Educator Emily Costales was a great introduction to dementia from Susan’s perspective as a carer and from Graeme who has early onset dementia. When Graeme was diagnosed with dementia he used his musical talents to express his feelings in relation to his dementia diagnosis. Graeme and Susan have travelled across NSW sharing their story and raising awareness about dementia. Graeme shared his experiences through a number of songs performed on the day with a special song written as a thank you ode to the Garden Village team.
Graeme receives Home Care services with Garden Village. He uses his Home Care Package for community access to attend the local ukulele club, lawn bowls and transport to visit family outside of Port Macquarie. This gives his wife and long term carer Susan respite. Trainee Community Support Workers Lachlan and Cooper support Graeme to attend activities in the community.
“Lachlan and Cooper are both are friendly, keen and interested. Helpful and empathetic with good people skills and great personalities. They are both caring, observant and display a nice balance between anticipating my needs and respecting my dignity,” Graeme Atkins Home Care Client
